Frequently Asked Questions

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is a set of clinical guidelines and protocols for the urgent treatment of cardiac arrest, stroke, and other life-threatening cardiovascular emergencies. It builds upon Basic Life Support (BLS) by incorporating advanced interventions such as airway management, pharmacology, and understanding of cardiac rhythms.

The ACLS course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units.

The course teaches essential life-saving skills, such as how to perform chest compressions, use a bag-mask device, and operate an AED. Participants will learn to recognize and respond quickly to respiratory and cardiac arrest, as well as manage conditions like symptomatic bradycardia. It also covers airway management, related medications, and handling acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and strokes. Additionally, the course focuses on effective communication as both a team member and a leader during resuscitation efforts.

Participants are expected to have proficiency in high-quality BLS skills, including chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and AED. They should also be capable of reading and interpreting electrocardiograms (ECGs), understanding ACLS pharmacology, and managing airways.

The ACLS course is available in different formats to fit your learning needs. One option is Instructor-Led Training (ILT), which takes place in a traditional classroom. This format includes hands-on practice and guidance from an experienced instructor. Another option is Blended Learning, which combines online coursework, called HeartCode® ACLS, with an in-person skills session. This allows you to complete the online portion at your own pace before practicing hands-on skills.

The course duration depends on the type of training. The full instructor-led training (ILT) course takes about 10 to 11 hours, not including breaks. The ILT update course is shorter, lasting around 6 to 7 hours, also without breaks.

The ACLS Provider Course Completion Card stays valid for two years, meaning you need to renew it before it expires to maintain your certification. This ensures you stay up-to-date with the latest guidelines and skills in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support. Renewing your certification involves taking a refresher course or renewal program to review and practice the key techniques required to handle medical emergencies effectively.

ACLS EP is designed for experienced healthcare professionals who regularly lead or participate in emergency assessments and treatments. It goes beyond core ACLS training by offering critical thinking opportunities and focusing on complex cardiovascular, respiratory, and other emergencies.

The AHA offers a blended learning option called HeartCode® ACLS, which combines online coursework with an in-person skills session.

To renew, you must complete an ACLS Renewal Course before your current certification expires. Renewal course

You can find an AHA Training Center offering ACLS courses by checking the AHA website or reaching out to local hospitals and healthcare facilities. Many hospitals, clinics, and healthcare organizations partner with the American Heart Association to provide ACLS training. These centers offer classes to help healthcare providers stay certified and up-to-date with life-saving techniques.

Bring a valid photo ID, the ACLS Provider Manual, and any pre-course materials or assignments. It's advisable to check with your specific training center for additional requirements.

The ACLS instructor-led course covers key topics, including preventing cardiac arrest, working in high-performance teams, delivering early and continuous high-quality CPR, understanding systems of care, recognizing and managing cardiopulmonary arrest, post-cardiac arrest care, acute dysrhythmias, strokes, and acute coronary syndromes (ACS).

Key interventions in ACLS include giving oxygen to the patient, performing chest compressions, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED). Healthcare providers may also administer medications like adrenaline and atropine to support the patient’s heart function.

The purpose of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is to give the best care possible to people facing life-threatening emergencies, like heart attacks or severe breathing problems. It focuses on quickly identifying the problem, providing life-saving treatments, and improving the person’s chances of recovery. For more detailed information, please visit the American Heart Association's ACLS page.
