Frequently Asked Questions

The UAG test is the FAA's initial aeronautical knowledge exam required to obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate for operating small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) commercially under Part 107 regulations.

A small unmanned aircraft is a drone that weighs less than 55 pounds at takeoff, including all equipment and attachments onboard. These aircraft are commonly used for various purposes like photography, mapping, deliveries, and inspections. Their lightweight design allows for easier operation and greater flexibility compared to larger drones.

The test evaluates knowledge in areas such as: Applicable regulations for sUAS operations, Airspace classification and operating requirements, Aviation weather effects on sUAS performance, Emergency procedures, Crew resource management, Radio communication procedures, Aeronautical decision-making and judgment, Airport operations, Maintenance and preflight inspection procedures.

An unmanned aircraft is part of a larger system called a UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System). It’s an aircraft designed to fly without a pilot on board or any direct control from inside. Instead, it is operated remotely or through pre-programmed instructions. These aircraft are commonly used for tasks like aerial photography, surveying, delivery services, and even search-and-rescue missions.

UAG training prepares people to safely operate small unmanned aircraft, like drones, under FAA rules. This training covers important topics like airspace regulations, weather, safety procedures, and how to avoid risks while flying. It’s essential for anyone who wants to use drones for work, as passing the UAG exam is required to get a Remote Pilot Certificate.

To be eligible, you must: Be at least 16 years old, Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English, Be in a physical and mental condition to safely operate a sUAS.

Testing fees vary by location. Contact your chosen testing center for specific pricing information.

Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID. Ensure you have your FAA Tracking Number (FTN) obtained during the registration process.

You can retake the test after a 14-day waiting period. Each attempt requires payment of the testing fee.

After passing, complete FAA Form 8710-13 using the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) system. The FAA will conduct a background check before issuing the certificate.

The certificate is valid for 24 months. To maintain it, complete an online recurrent training course every 24 months.

To get certified, you must pass the Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG) knowledge exam, which costs $175. To keep your certification, you need to complete free online training every 24 months.

NATO divides UAS into three classes. Class I includes micro, mini, and small drones. Class II covers medium-sized tactical systems. Class III is for larger aircraft, like Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) and High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) drones.

The UAG online course is for anyone who wants to fly drones commercially and needs to pass the FAA Part 107 knowledge test. It’s ideal for beginners and experienced drone operators who want to learn the rules and improve their skills.

Yes, the UAG study guide includes practice questions to help you prepare for the exam. The FAA provides sample questions for the Unmanned Aircraft General (UAG) test, which are suitable study material for the Remote Pilot Certificate with a small UAS Rating. These questions represent what you might find on the actual test and serve as a helpful study guide.
